We Need a Trailer!

November 19, 2008

So we’ve had some interesting brainstorming sessions lately at the meetings. Check the meeting minutes (under the QCBS Documents tab) to see what I’m talking about. These public rides are good; they allow us to get in some repair time, but we want more. We get some flats, some minor breakdowns, and bike repair question time at the end, but we still want to educate more. This is the source of constant frustration for us: not having a shop space where we can teach more and hands-on about bike repair.

Until we hear back from the IRS regarding our 501(c)3 status and then find a graciously donated space, we have come up with a solution to do bike repair workshops!

A trailer! Kind of like this:

trailer

We will be able to pack multiple “workstations” (consisting of bike repair stand, tools, and maybe a small table) in a trailer along with extra bike parts and supplies. We drag it to one of the places that already wants us to do a workshop on their property, unpack the stuff, and voila! It’s a QCBS Shop Day, on location! A trailer would also come in handy when it comes time to collect people’s junk bikes that they want to get ride of.

So, this is a call to action for our community.

PLEASE HELP QUERENCIA FIND A TRAILER!

It doesn’t have to be like the one pictured. That is our perfect, dream trailer, but we’ll work with whatever is cheap or free. Even if it’s just an open air utility trailer or an old horse trailer, we’re prepared to put labor into enclosing it.

Email us at info@qcbs.org with any leads.

Let’s get this shop on the road!

We Came Away with Knowledge!

November 9, 2008

…about how to fix a flat, about how to improvise when a screw goes missing- causing a fender to rub a tire, and what a freewheel looks like when it locks up. We learned where the central most Denton Public Libraries are. After looking through the 2000/2001 Denton Parks & Recreation master plan and pedestrian & bicycle linkages plan, we also learned that the city has done much research and thought about building a cycling linkage infrastructure. They maintain that increased bike lanes and bike insignia will attract more people to biking as an alternative mode of transportation!

I’m tellin ya, check out the plan and talk to the city about it if you’d like to know how it’s going.

Denton Public Library Tour

October 30, 2008

Querencia announces another public ride!

On November 1st, at 2pm, we’ll be taking a breezy tour of our public libraries in the center of Denton. We’ll be starting at the Emily Fowler branch at 502 Oakland st. We’ll head north to the North Branch Library and come back through the TWU campus to end at Emily Fowler.

The Denton Public Libraries are excellent, free resources for books, journals, dvds, cds, government docs, etc. In their collection, they have many books pertaining to all things 2 wheeled and human powered, including books on BIKE REPAIR! Check them out (literally):

Books on Anything Relating to the Bicycle (fiction and non-fiction)

Books on BIKE REPAIR

Books on Bike Trails and Touring (including recommended Texas rides)

Books on Bike Safety

The Library also houses a government document that is very important to our Denton bike community:

The 2000/2001 Denton Parks & Recreation master plan and pedestrian & bicycle linkages plan!!

This plan shows what the City has in mind for bike infrastructure for the future of Denton.

Come exercise and expand your mind for free with us.

Rail Trail Ride Followup

October 6, 2008

We rode, we fixed flats, and we had ice cream: SUCCESS.

Thanks to all who came out and supported the first QCBS Rail Trail ride last Saturday, we had a blast. The ride was safe and polite, and we offer many thanks to officer Andy DeBerry of Denton Police for coming along with us. We’ll soon post online the letters we displayed, which urge the city leadership to improve and maintain the cycling road infrastructure in Denton.

UPDATE! The letters are now posted under the “QCBS Documents” section. Take a look.

Rail Ride announcement

September 8, 2008

On October 4th, QCBS is hosting a Denton Rail Trail Ride, a leisurely-paced ride along the Denton Rail Trail route from just south of the city square to Loop 288, where many popular shopping destinations are. We’ll be starting at and ending on the town square across from Beth Marie’s ice cream parlor. Start time is 11AM, and we encourage all particpants to wear helmets as we’ll be sharing some roads with automobiles on this route. We welcome riders of all ages and bikes of all types.

At the start and at the end of this ride, we will also be promoting a letter writing initiative to Mayor Mark Burroughs about the lack of bike lanes in Denton and about the lack of a bridge connecting the rail trail across 288. The absence of a bridge prohibits riding the rest of the trail to Corinth. QCBS will address and mail all the letters that are signed to the Mayor.

first qcbs tube wallet!

first qcbs tube wallet!

We’ve recently assesed our growing mountain of used tubes, tires, and other bike miscellany, and we have begun planning for an upcoming craft day.  Tubes can be recycled into cool useful stuff like this and everything from here. If you’re interested in participating, contact us at info@qcbs.org, and we’ll let you know how you can get involved.

We’re calling out folks with sewing machines and ideas!  Feel free to comment on this post if you have ideas or are interested in participating.
